UPPER BACK Pain
Cervicothoracic Junction, and Ribs.
A fixated rib presents like a “crick” in the upper back, often between the shoulder blades. It will feel like something is caught up or stuck. That crick will hurt with rotation, like when putting on a seat belt, and with inspiration, especially a deep breath in.
The cervicothoracic junction is prone to irritation. This is where opposing curves converge, the mobile neck meets the inflexible upper back.
CTJ fixation, if fixation exists, is common and can cause pain in the base of the neck that radiates out to the shoulders. Conservative treatment is generally recommended as a primary option, except in cases of instability.
Motion restrictions at the cervicothoracic junction and rib heads are a lot of fun to mobilize! Since mobilizing restrictions might be complete fiction, let me rephrase.
Adjusting these areas typically provides instant relief, that is occasionally preceded by a little discomfort, but the juice is worth the squeeze!
